O. M. Vicars Professorship
The O. M. Vicars Professorship in Law was created by the late Carl W. Smith and other members of Mr. Vicars's family. The chair is designed to support a faculty member who teaches legal ethics and works to introduce ethical studies into other parts of the law curriculum. A prominent attorney in Wise, Virginia, Mr. Vicars died in 1946. Carl Smith (College '51), Mr. Vicars's grandson, was chairman and president of the Charlottesville-based AMVEST Corporation. He was a Board of Visitors member, a chair of the Jeffersonian Restoration Advisory Board, a Darden Foundation trustee, and a supporter of University athletic programs, medical programs, and historic preservation initiatives. The athletics precinct containing Scott Stadium is named in his honor, recognizing his generous challenge gift for the stadium expansion. Through AMVEST, he provided funding for the athletic program at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Mr. Smith died in 2005.
