Lewis F. Powell Jr.Professorship

The Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Professorship in Law was funded by an anonymous donor and friends of Justice Powell upon his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court. A former partner in the Richmond firm of Hunton & Williams, Mr. Powell served as chairman of the Richmond School Board, a member of the State Board of Education, and president of the American Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. In 1971, he was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served with distinction until 1987. A recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Award in Law, Justice Powell died in 1998.
