John C. Stennis Professorship in Law
The John C. Stennis Professorship in Law was funded by an anonymous donor. It honors John Stennis (Law '27), who began his career with a successful 1928 bid for the Mississippi legislature. He subsequently was elected district attorney and later was appointed then elected judge of the circuit court. In 1947, Mr. Stennis was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1988. He chaired the Armed Services Committee and the Appropriations Committee, drafting the first Senate Code of Ethics and cosponsoring the War Powers Act of 1973. Mr. Stennis died in 1995.
