Emerson G. Spies Distinguished Professorship
The Emerson G. Spies Professorship in Law was funded by students, friends, and family of the former Law School dean. A specialist in property law and real estate finance, Mr. Spies joined the faculty in 1946. He became dean in 1976 and subsequently guided the school through a period of remarkable growth that included more students and faculty and an expanded physical plant. He was chiefly responsible for implementing a degree program in judicial process for federal and state judges. Mr. Spies, who received the 1984 Thomas Jefferson Award, retired in 1985 and died in 1990.
