Armistead M. Dobie Professorship

The Armistead M. Dobie Professorship in Law was funded by the estate of Mr. Dobie's wife, Elizabeth M. Dobie. Armistead Dobie (College 1901, Graduate Arts & Sciences 1903, Law 1904) was dean of the Law School from 1932 to 1939 and served as University marshal. He sat on the U.S. Supreme Court committee that drafted rules of procedure in federal court and was special assistant to the U.S. attorney general. In 1939, he was named a federal judge for the Western District of Virginia and later was appointed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit. He died in 1962.
