Lawrence Lewis, Jr., Professorship in Architecture


The Lawrence Lewis, Jr., Professorship in Architecture was funded by the philanthropist's friends and family to attract and retain an eminent scholar at the School of Architecture. Renowned for his architectural preservation efforts at the University and in St. Augustine, Fla., Lawrence Lewis (Arch '42) was an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. He received the National Preservation Honor Award and the Order of La Florida, St. Augustine's highest honor. He was a member of the Board of Visitors, president of the Alumni Association and the Virginia Athletics Foundation and former chairman and president of Flagler System Companies. Mr. Lewis, who died in 1995, was a member of the Seven Society.

The Board of Visitors elected William Sherman to the Lawrence Lewis, Jr., Professorship in Architecture in 2016. Sherman is the Chair of the Department of Architecture, Associate Vice President for Research in Design, Arts and Humanities, and the Founding Director of the OpenGrounds initiative at the University of Virginia.

Sherman graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University with undergraduate concentrations in architecture and urban planning before graduating from Yale University with a masters of architecture. Sherman has held faculty positions at several institutions outside of the University of Virginia including Rice University and the University of Miami. Professionally, Sherman has practiced at multiple architecture firms including his own, William Sherman and Associates in Charlottesville, where he is principal. As an architect and educator, his teaching and design research examine dynamic cultural and environmental processes in architectural design, ranging in scale from human physiology to global energy flows. Sherman founded OpenGrounds at UVA in 2012. OpenGrounds is a network of places and programs that inspire creative research at the intersection of technology, sciences, the arts and humanities.
